Seasonal planting guide: what to plant & when

Have you been considering some spring planting? Before you head out and buy the first seeds you see, it’s important to consider the current season and what will be best to plant at this time of year. Different types of plants, fruit and vegetables will thrive at different times of the year—the climate you live in will also have a lot to do with what will grow best within particular conditions.

To help your veggie patch flourish, the team here at Garlick’s H Hardware in Muswellbrook has put together a helpful seasonal planting guide below for NSW residents.

Spring

Spring is the perfect time to plant an array of seed options. When it comes to spring planting, some of the popular herbs to grow at this time includes coriander, oregano, chives, dill, parsley, sage and thyme. It’s important to protect your plants from heat as we approach the end of spring and temperatures continue to rise. In terms of fruit and vegetables, you could try out capsicum, lettuce, pumpkin, zucchini or rhubarb.

Summer

As the warmer months hit, a few other herbs to start considering include mint, tarragon and fennel. When it comes to fruit and vegetables that thrive in hotter conditions, you may want to try beetroot, carrot, celery and chilli. If you live further inland where it’s significantly hot and dry, these conditions may be too extreme for sowing and you should therefore wait until temperatures cool down.

Autumn

Once the warmer seasons come to an end and cooler conditions return, recommended seasonal planting of herbs includes garlic bulbs, parsley and thyme. For fruit and vegetables, a few popular autumn options are green beans, spinach, peas and broad beans.

Winter

With winter comes many new opportunities for herb, fruit and vegetable growth. When considering seasonal planting, herbs that thrive in cooler conditions include comfrey, lavender, dill and chamomile. For fruit and vegetables, now is the ideal time to try out most types of Chinese greens such as pak choi.
