Over time, timber outdoor furniture can take a battering from the weather, however, provided it is still in one piece, it can easily be brought back to life. Follow our expert tips to transform a worn table to brand new again.
How to refresh a timber outdoor table: why does timber wear over time?
When timber is exposed to the weather, it changes in a few ways. The faded grey effect is a result of rain washing out the pigments and tannins over time. Blackened sections also form when UV light oxidises the tannins, breaking down the natural glues in a process that attracts mould and mildew. As it dries out and the original varnish begins to wear away, the top woodgrain is raised, making the surface dry and rough. The good news is that timber is tough and durable. With a little elbow grease, you can save your old timber furniture from landfill.
How to refresh a timber outdoor table: 7 easy steps
- Use a drill to replace any rusting screws with new stainless steel fasteners and add galvanised brackets to reinforce a wobbly base if required.
- Give your table a thorough clean. Use an all-in-one wood cleaner to remove all the dirt, buildup and mould that has accumulated. Working in a well-ventilated place, put on gloves, wet the table with a damp cloth and then apply the wood cleaner.
- Scrub the table with a nylon scrubbing brush and don’t forget to get in the nooks and crannies. An old toothbrush is handy for the hard-to-reach spots. Let the chair dry overnight.
- The next day, sand the table with some fine grit sandpaper or a sanding block until it is smooth. Wipe the table well afterwards.
- Now it’s time to stain. Look for a semi-transparent, waterproof stain and sealer. The key to a smooth, even finish is to use a 5-7cm angled brush and apply a very light coat. Wipe off any excess stain or drips immediately. If the coat is applied too thickly, it is more likely to crack or bubble.
- Let the first coat dry for 1-2 hours. You can give the table a light sanding between coats if it is feeling a little rough.
- Wipe down and apply one more coat of stain. Let cure 72 hours before using.
