5 Awesome DIY timber projects you can do with the kids

Timber

Wood is a versatile material for any woodworking project. It can be used for crafts, DIY home décor projects, gifts and more. Timber can be painted, stained or left unfinished. The possibilities are endless! Looking for ways to entertain the kids during the school holidays? Check out our blog for DIY timber projects to try. Once you’ve chosen your project and tutorial, a quick trip to your favourite hardware store in Muswell brook will take care of the rest.

DIY nail string art

DIY décor gives kids the freedom to create customised pieces that fit their style, favourite colours and personalities. This DIY nail string art project can be done in under two hours and most of the supplies can be purchased cheaply from your local hardware store or from around the home. If your children are young, we recommend that an adult does the hammering and the kids can help out with the strings.

You’ll need: wood, hammer, lots of nails, scissors, string, sandpaper, masking tape, template.

DIY Balsa wood wind chime

Balsa wood is light and easy to manipulate so your kids can have a great time playing with it. Get creative with these DIY wind chimes and enjoy the vibe it gives to your indoor or outdoor spaces. Note: This project requires adult supervision.

You’ll need: Balsa wood strips of varying lengths (approximately 2-3cm wide x 10-20cm long), heavy duty hole punch (to make holes in the balsa wood), water colour paints, liquid droppers (optional), paint brush, wooden beads, nylon cord (not too thick as the beads need to be threaded onto it), wire, small bells, strong stick (from nature) or a small piece of timber (about 30cm long).
